Blessed Yule

Ice candle

Ice candle
Merry Winter Solstice.

All I managed to make to celebrate the shortest day today is this ice candle as unfortunately my frozen suncatchers didn't turn out as planned and the sun didn't really come out today anyway in order to take pictures.
We did however go for a lovely walk by the sea today where the sky had turned all shades of red and pink, but as I wasn't expecting such great colours on an elsewise rather miserable day I didn't take my camera.

I hope you all enjoyed today and look forward to the return of the sun.

St Nikolaus was here

Although the little man is too little to understand we've been introducing some German traditions already such as celebrating St Nikolaus day today.

Traditionally in Germany kids would clean their boots and put them outside their room on the evening of 5 December in the hope that St Nikolaus will fill them with some goodies (if they have been good). If they have been bad they will find coals in them the next day. Typically Nikolaus would bring some chocolates, nuts and fruit like he did for me on a plate (which is also traditional).

As the little man isn't eating solids yet and certainly wouldn't be having any nuts or chocolates he got some presents: a pair of boots (as he didn't have any to leave out for St Nikolaus), an English Christmas book, a CD with German Christmas songs and a little police car.

And what better way to get into the spirit of the festive season and to celebrate today than with a traditional St Nikolaus children's song. Enjoy!

Birthday walk

It's my Birthday and the weather has been kind. Although it's been bitter cold all day - the kind of cold that makes it feel like your nose is going to freeze from the inside - the sun's been shining, so we got wrapped up warm and went for a lovely walk.

... the Berlin wall fell.

Had that not happened I wouldn't have been able to leave the GDR to live in England, which means I would have never met my lovely hubby and therefore the little man would not exist. I am so grateful for what I've got and would rather not think about how life would have turned out for me had that ugly wall not come down.

Although I wasn't quite 12 years old when it happened I knew back then that this meant something big and life changing. I still remember the news and those days at school when every day there seemed to be less and less kids in the classroom as everyone wanted to go across the border to see what it was all about. On Saturdays the classroom was pretty much empty to a point where they simply stopped teaching on Saturdays - hooray. Then finally the day came when my parents took me and my sister across to the West for a day and we bought our first kinder surprise egg and got some bubblegum and trashy toys from a machine.

Here's a look at the news from 25 years ago.

Today thousands of people in Berlin celebrate the fall of the wall with a great light art project called Lichtgrenze (light border).

As we can't be there to celebrate I made a little lantern for the little man to celebrate here at home.

It's made from black card and multi coloured transparent paper. It's hanging from a glow stick and to make it childproof I used a flickering LED candle.

Sunday afternoon

We went for a walk on Hornsea beach, making the most of our Sunday afternoon before the rain hit. As soon as the little man heard the calming sound of the waves he fell asleep, but all that sea air made him rather hungry.

Bedtime story

Turns out that watching fish is making the little man very tired.

watching fish

So after his shower I read him his bedtime story to send him off to sleep.

We're currently reading the Children's and Household Tales by the brothers Grimm (in German) - the very same copy my mum and dad used to read to me when I was little.

Sensory Play: Smell

Today I've introduced the little man to some interesting new smells. We walked around the garden where I picked a few different herbs to let him have a little sniff. I think eucalyptus was his favourite. I am going to repeat this over the next few days, but one herb at the time.

The little creature seems really eager to discover new things and smell is usually the sense that's a bit neglected during play, so I am quite keen for him to explore that.

I am already excited about introducing him to the smells of Christmas: orange, cinnamon, pine ...

A lovely evening walk

We went for a walk around the field this evening, so the little man would get some fresh air while we enjoyed the view.
